Something Stinks in New Jersey...

... and it's not Secaucus. A while back, I wrote about a student from a N.J. suburb right outside of Manhattan who recorded his teacher's classes, as the teacher was teaching such drivel in his history class such as

...that evolution and the Big Bang were not scientific, that dinosaurs were aboard Noah’s ark, and that only Christians had a place in heaven...

Now here's where it gets ridiculous. As the NYT reports, this kid is getting a lot of flack from the community about it. Now, mind you, this isn't some backwater Alabama town, this is right outside of Manhattan. Surprisingly enough, the teacher is getting a lot of support, as well:

Staci Snider, the president of the local teacher’s union, said Mr. Paszkiewicz (pronounced pass-KEV-ich) had been assigned a lawyer from the union, the New Jersey Education Association. Two calls to Mr. Paszkiewicz at school and one to his home were not returned.

In this tale of the teacher who preached in class and the pupil he offended, students and the larger community have mostly lined up with Mr. Paszkiewicz, not with Matthew, who has received a death threat handled by the police, as well as critical comments from classmates.

Nothing promotes good ol' Christian charity and Jesus' message of love like a death threat, huh? Unfricking believable, eh? I'm sure he'll win any lawsuits, though. It is refreshing to see so many young people standing up and challenging religious belief lately.
