Dobson: World warms up, but for him, it's still about the sex

It seems that for a rare change, reality is creeping into the evangelical movement. A growing number of evangelicals are quite concerned about things other than things involving other peoples' genitalia, as evidenced by the discussions at this week's meeting of the National Association of Evangelicals. Radical clerics James Dobson, Gary Bauer, Donald Wildmon and others have been putting on pressure for the organization to restrain its Washington policy director, the Rev. Richard Cizik, from putting forward his views on global warming. As usual, with these people, it's about the sex:

"We have observed that Cizik and others are using the global warming controversy to shift the emphasis away from the great moral issues of our time, notably the sanctity of human life, the integrity of marriage and the teaching of sexual abstinence and morality to our children," said the letter, which was signed by prominent religious conservatives such as James Dobson, Don Wildmon, Paul Weyrich and Gary Bauer.

Cizik has been outspoken on the global warming issue, saying in a recent documentary that "to harm this world by environmental degradation is an offense against God."

Interestingly enough, Dobson uses the same argument that us reality-based people have been using in regards to his beliefs :

But Dobson and the other signatories of the letter to the National Association of Evangelicals board said evidence supporting global warming was not conclusive and that the organization "lacks the expertise to settle the controversy."

"The issue should be addressed scientifically and not theologically," they said, calling on the group's board to either rein in Cizik or encourage him to resign.

I haven't seen any 'conclusive' evidence supporting the existence of God, either. It's interesting that Dobson et. al want to have this addressed 'scientifically', yet don't seem to feel this way regarding sex ed or evolution. Eh, nobody ever claimed consistency was one of their strong points.

Dobson also thinks you can keep your young sons from getting 'the gay' by making sure they get to look at daddy's prick in the shower, just to give you an idea of the brilliant mind at work here. And Tony Perkins (no, not the guy who played Norman Bates in 'Psycho', the other one who's actually batshit crazy and runs the hate-group "Family Research Council") thinks it's just another "part of a leftist agenda that threatened evangelical unity." Uh-huh. And we also talked Ted Haggard into the meth-use and gay sex for that reason, too, I guess.

Snarkiness aside, I must give these people some credit for seeing past these sex-based/moral police issues to ones that do actually affect the entire planet. Maybe some of them are taking seriously the idea of taking care of their deity's creation, instead of just squandering it as if it didn't matter because the Rapture was gonna come take them all away from it anyways.
