Name that Movie time...

Ok, so last week's movie was the original 'Dirty Harry' (1972) starring Clint Eastwood, and directed by Don Siegel. Alex over at 'Rip and Read' finally got it right. I'll be sending him a copy of Joe Lieberman's album of love ballads dedicated to President Bush. Keep an eye out for it, Alex. Several people guessed some Dirty Harry sequels, which, like most things that transitioned from the 70's to the 80's, showed a marked decline in quality.

The original is in my top 10 of all time, for although it is singlehandedly responsible for the archetype of the renegade cop that unfortunately gave us all of those bad 80's cop movies, if you watch it in context, there is a strong political undertone as to what was going on in the country at the time. The Miranda court decision had just passed, crime was on the rise, and although it could be argued that Dirty Harry was most definitely from a conservative perspective (although Eastwood denies that was ever the original intent of the film), there is a lot of food for thought to be had when watching the film, in terms of the themes of law and order, and civil rights. It was a bit controversial at the time, with the word 'fascist' being thrown around quite a bit in the discussions. As with many of Eastwood's films, the music is incredible, thanks to the writing of Lalo Schifrin. And political contexts aside, it's a great suspenseful movie.

Nobody answered the Stupid Trivia Question: before Clint Eastwood got the role, the two actors considered for the part were Paul Newman and, get a load of this... Frank Sinatra. You feel lucky, baby?
