Krugman on the Theocrats

It's often been said that the Religious Right does indeed have an agenda to install a theocratic government. This is often met with the response along the lines of it is a crazy conspiracy theory and all they really want is more recognition of religion in public life. And then they continue to peddle the bullshit line that our (mostly deist) Founding Fathers intended this to be a 'Christian nation'. Yeah, right.

Paul Krugman's got a great piece on how deep those theocratic tentacles really go into the government. And this is the money quote:

The infiltration of the federal government by large numbers of people seeking to impose a religious agenda — which is very different from simply being people of faith — is one of the most important stories of the last six years. It’s also a story that tends to go underreported, perhaps because journalists are afraid of sounding like conspiracy theorists.

But this conspiracy is no theory. The official platform of the Texas Republican Party pledges to “dispel the myth of the separation of church and state.” And the Texas Republicans now running the country are doing their best to fulfill that pledge.

And for those that still think it's a crazy liberal conspiracy theory, let me quote you the darling of the right and one of the most corrupt, sleazy politicians of the modern era, (who also typifies the male, white, Christian, victimized crybaby archetype) Texas Republican Tom DeLay:

Ahead of the 2000 presidential race, he outlined a vision where "we march forward with a biblical worldview, a worldview that says God is our Creator, that man is a sinner, and that we will save this country by changing the hearts and minds of Americans.

And don't forget this nugget:

"Ladies and gentlemen, Christianity offers the only viable, reasonable, definitive answer to the questions of 'Where did I come from?' 'Why am I here?' 'Where am I going?' 'Does life have any meaningful purpose?' " DeLay said. "Only Christianity offers a way to understand that physical and moral border. Only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and thought, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world -- only Christianity."

Gee, doesn't sound like there's any agenda there, does it? I'm optimistic that normal rational people, secularists and liberal/moderate religious types are finally waking up to this fact. Anybody that truly takes seriously the notion of 'liberty' should be concerned, regardless of where they are on the political spectrum.
